With the passage of the hate crimes bill in the House, the religious right has gone into a frenzy of Apocalyptic predictions. Folks like James Dobson are predicting that “protection under the law will be extended to the 30 sexual disorders identified as such by the American Psychiatric Association…bisexuality, exhibitionism, fetishism, incest, necrophilia, pedophilia, prostitution, sexual masochism….”
So here’s my question: Why do we give these people the time of day? I know that the first reaction is to come out and start an argument, but doesn’t that just feed into storm that Dobson and his ilk feed off of? Any reasonable person who hears these completely unfounded and irrational statement is sure to roll their eyes and reach for the TV remote. In other words, why should we go down to their level?
